Making the Most of an Online Parenting Class

When a couple with dependent children divorces, the court often requires both parents to take a parenting class. It may be difficult to get to a class, especially when your life is so unsettled. There are a number of types of online parenting class available that meet court ordered requirements, and they are a good option for a lot of folk. Since you have to do this, make the most of the opportunity and make sure you get the information you need to parent your children through your divorce.

Court requirements

The first and most important issue is to make sure the course meets court requirements. If necessary, print off the class outline and show it to your attorney. Make sure you will get a certificate of completion to show the court, too.

What to expect from yourself

The class should prepare you for your own normal reactions to the divorce. You're experiencing a lot of it already and the online parenting class should cover the stages of grief and loss, and teach you to deal with your own emotions and pain. You have to take care of yourself in order to take care of your children.

What to expect from your children

You should learn how children normally respond to divorce, and what kind of behaviors you can expect from them. The online parenting class should include age-specific strategies for helping the children through the divorce and the changes that will follow.

Parenting skills

You should learn general parenting skills, such as discipline, communication and building self-esteem. It just makes good sense to address these issues in any parenting class, and it's especially important during the stress of divorce.

Co-parenting

Make sure the online parenting class covers co-parenting issues, including making a co-parenting plan, dealing with disagreements, and dealing with your ex-spouse in a way that doesn't negatively affect the children.

Step-parenting

Whether either you or your ex-spouse is in another relationship or not, the class should cover step-parenting. One or both of you may re-marry, and you and your kids will have to deal with the issues that result. Blended families have their own potential set of problems, and it's best to know about them ahead of time.

Signs of abuse

The class should teach you how to recognize signs of abuse. This is just common safety knowledge that all parents should possess.

An online parenting class is widely available, and many meet the requirements of the court. Evaluate what is available, and make sure you get the information you need to help your children through this difficult time.
