Raising Mini-Adults: Teen Parenting Advice

Everyone was a teenager once. It was the years remembered most vividly; the new experiences, rebellion, and craving freedom of all things. Now that you are a grown, responsible adult with teens of your own, it is hard to raise them without the help of others. That is why teen parenting advice can be most beneficial to you.

Teen parenting advice can come from endless books, parenting classes, family and friends. But here are a few simple, pragmatic tips for raising your teenager:

Communicate

Teenagers and their parents never seem to be on the same page. Separated by a generation, you may not share the same opinions or beliefs as your young one. But it is important to talk to your teen, and as much as you can. They are at the critical point of their life when they are no longer a child, but not yet an adult. Encourage them to discuss with you any questions or problems they are having and remember that you are their parent, not their enemy.

Go Easy

With raging hormones comes the inevitability of rebellion. You tell your teen not to stay out past 10 p.m., and they do so anyway. The best teen parenting advice for this situation is to not get overly angry with them. Not doing what you ask is their way of stating their independence. Calmly remind them that they are not yet out of your household, and still need to abide by your rules.

Be There

A simple piece of teen parenting advice that every parent should remember is to be there for your teenager. No matter how much you two may argue or bicker, or no matter how many tears are shed or expletives are shouted, they are your child, and you are their rock. When they get into trouble or need somebody, it is your job to be their shoulder to lean on or to cry on. This will help them develop trust in you and confidence in themselves.

The teenager years are said to be the hardest years of one's life. With so much to take in, and the endless paths there are, it can be overwhelming. The best teen parenting advice simply is common knowledge with every human relationship: communicate, listen, have patience, and be there as much as you can for your teen as they will surely thank you in the long run.
